Simple Scan 1.0

Last week I hit 1.0* for simple scan. It's not perfect but it appears to be reliable and is an improvement on the existing scanning experience.

I've prosed simple-scan for GNOME 3.0 and will be following the GNOME release schedule from now on (next release will be 2.31.1).

*Make that 1.0.2. There's always a few last minute fixes :)

Thanks for Simple Scan!

It worked perfectly for a task that would have been a pain in Xsane, if I could have even figured out how.

i was very impressed by it on my use-case, i just found what i think is one bug, but i have to retry it with a more recent version before i'll open it on launchpad. since i don't know when i'll have the time, i'll just mention it here.

i made a multi-page PDF scan with simple scan, then printed and the printout was a huge zoom of only a very small version of the page. i had to tick to scale the printout to fit the page in evince.

i thought it was an evince bug but it was the same in acrobat reader on windows. you can also see the problem if you ask for a print preview.

again, i'll try to reproduce it as soon as i have some time, and if i can still confirm it with recent versions, i'll open a bug.

but otherwise, GREAT JOB! really very good.

I am another anonymous user that have the same PDF issue.

It only prints a huge zoom that covers a part of the page when I print a A4 scanned at 300 dpi.

I could not find a related bug report. We should report it.

Simple Scan has helped my family a lot. It is a lot easier for my family in other parts of the world to handle our humble requests for scanned documents.

Congratulations! Simple Scan has been a huge improvement for me while testing Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and I really love how quick and easy you've made the most common scanning tasks.

I've been scanning things at work and home for 15 years now, and you've really taken the dread out of scanning--especially multipage documents!

It's looking great, I tried it for the first time last week. I'm specially happy I could sit at the UDS session where most its non-features were decided :)

"In file included from simple-scan.c:17:
/usr/include/gudev-1.0/gudev/gudev.h:25:2: error: #error GUdev is currently unstable API. You must define G_UDEV_API_IS_SUBJECT_TO_CHANGE to acknowledge this."

This is really boring. Please remove it. I'm a user, I don't want meddling with variables and whatnot. Having compiled software from source code for last 10 years I have no bloody idea what to do with it.

Apart from that congratulations to releasing 1.0, even with all those 1.0.x :)

Now onto color management support, eh? :)

This is a great piece of software, thank you very much.

Just two problems with saving multipage PDF files:

1.) It takes a long, long time to save a PDF with just a few pages, and during that time it is almost impossible to work with my laptop (Core2Duo, T9300, 4 GB RAM).

2.) As mentioned by others, the resolution information that is saved in the PDF file is incorrect, resulting in huge page sizes (a page that was originally 8.3" x 11.7" in turned out to be 69.2" x 97.5" in the PDF).

As an answer to prokoudine, just add the requested line like this :

#define G_UDEV_API_IS_SUBJECT_TO_CHANGE 1
#include <gudev/gudev.h>

Please test this for the multifunctional printer Epson Stylus DX8400 . In Ubuntu releases before 10.04, it worked in xsane after installing libsane-extras. Now it does not find the scanner and it does not work in xsane or simple-scan.
Thank you.
I will file a bug report if this problem is not fixed by July 2010.

I am a problem here that when I send save it saves as pdf-sized print command and when it fills the entire sheet in both text and photo

Thank you guys for Simple Scan. It works great! I have one concern though; when I scan my docs and save them, I checked the file size under "properties" and one page is almost 1G. Am I missing something? Is there a way I can reduce the file size of these PDF scans? Please give me any input at bigham03@yahoo.com

It works!

Ubuntu 9.10
Scanner: Canon Lide 30
Printer: Samsung ML2010

Thank you, Robert

Simple Scan rocks, kudos to you. I've been using it for a couple of months, but today I had to scan 40 pages of line art, for a deadline, in somebody else's studio using my own laptop and a random canon mp970 scanner/printer that the gutenprint drivers wouldn't recognise. And it not only worked, it was painless :-)

Thanks!
